Tell My Story Project: Black Immigrant Women break their silence on domestic violence and sexual abuse.
On September 8th, 2020, a Ghanaian-American woman, Barbara Tommey, 27 years old, was gunned down in front of her job in Florida by her husband.
On June 13th, 2020, Oluwatoyin Ruth Salau, a Nigerian-American 19 year-old Black Lives Matter activist, was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed in Florida.
Black immigrant women have long held their silence and paid the ultimate price. Unfortunately, Barbara and Oluwatoyin can no longer make their own voices heard. Now, other victims and survivors want you to hear their stories of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Visit our virtual gallery below.
If you are a Black immigrant woman and want to share your story or someone else's story with their consent, please email us at info@hakiyetu.org. All stories are confidential and no names will be shared.
As a victim or survivor of domestic violence and/ or sexual abuse, help is available. Visit the National Domestic Violence Hotline for resources.
